The Discipleship Training School is designed to help you understand God and His kingdom more deeply, live more like Jesus and identify your unique gifts and purpose in the world.
During our Lecture Phase, local and international guest speakers explore a range of topics related to authentically following Jesus. This time is about making a personal response to what we're learning, drawing closer in intimacy with God, letting Him shape us and discovering more of His purposes for our lives. The Lecture Phase is followed by the Outreach Phase; a time of serving internationally as well as sharing with others what we have been learning and what God has been doing in our lives.
Our YWAM location is strategically located in a part of the city that is notorious for divisions. We will explore what it means to be peacemakers in the midst of a divided society. Included in our programme will be opportunities to serve locally during our Lecture Phase and abroad during the Outreach Phase. In addition, we are offering a 6 month internship to follow the DTS as an opportunity to grow further, be equipped in ministry and to serve in Belfast.
Belfast is a beautiful city with a conflicted past, and we long to see our divided city restored. We would love to invite you to join us as we learn, pray and serve together in this city!
Discipleship Training School is an amazing opportunity to go deeper in your faith and serve in different parts of the world. The first phase of DTS is 14 weeks of spiritually enriching lectures by various speakers followed by 9 weeks of practical outreach to serve and share God’s transforming love in other nations.

What is Discipleship Training School?
The Discipleship Training School (DTS) gives the opportunity to grow in the understanding of who God is and who He created you to be. It is a 6 month programme blending classroom learning, small group activities, personal reflection, practical service and community living. It gives you an opportunity to discover your passions and your part in God’s purposes for the world. It is also an opportunity to share the love of God by serving in Belfast and beyond.
As we are strategically situated in a divided area of a city that has experienced recent conflict, we will also explore what it means to live out the gospel in the midst of conflict. What does it mean to be peacemakers in the midst of a divided society and how can we be ministers of reconciliation? We believe this is at the heart of the gospel and that God’s heart is to see restoration and transformation in the midst of brokenness.
The course is open to people from all over the world, representing different denominations and cultures. It’s an opportunity to come together for in-depth teaching and training in Christian living and evangelism, with a view to be involved in missions either short or long term. The course is divided into two parts: the lecture Phase and the Outreach Phase.
Purpose of DTS
The purpose of the DTS is:
1. To GATHER and CHALLENGE people to worship, listen to and obey God, releasing them to serve through evangelism, intercession, acts of compassion and other expressions of God’s heart for the world, possibly even pioneering new ministries.
2. To INSPIRE and CULTIVATE growth in one’s relationship with God resulting in Christ-like character, which is based on a solid Biblical foundation, the work of the Holy Spirit and the personal application of Biblical truth, especially concerning God’s character, the cross and empowering grace.
3. To SHARPEN one’s ability to relate to, learn from and work with people, including those of different cultures, personalities and perspectives.
4. To further EQUIP each one to serve God’s purposes either in or outside of YWAM’s Family of Ministries, strengthening a commitment to reach the lost, to care for the poor, and to influence all areas of society.
5. To IMPART the vision and foundational values of Youth With A Mission International as well as that of the host operating location and to provide information regarding a variety of opportunities for service.
The Lecture Phase of the Discipleship Training School (DTS) will provide classroom learning, community-bonding, and heart change. It’s designed to deepen your understanding of God and His heart for this world. A crucial element to the learning experience is our “live/learn” environment. You’ll learn not only from lectures but also from community living, regular rhythms of worship and intercession, local outreach and practical service.
Each week we will have different lecturers, from both local and international locations, that will teach from their wealth of experience. Topics may include “Hearing God’s Voice,” “the Nature and Character of God,” “Exploring the Bible,” and “Reconciliation and Restoration.”
Key areas of learning during DTS include:
Our YWAM house is in an urban setting in a divided area of Belfast. In addition to exploring the above curriculum, we will explore what it means to live in a divided society and how we can be part of God’s call to the “ministry of reconciliation” (2 Corinthians 5v17). Weekly outreach will be included in the schedule to give opportunity to practically share God’s transforming love with others through serving in the city.
Join us as we grow deeper with God and allow His love to transform us!
The Outreach Phase of the Discipleship Training School (DTS) gives the opportunity to take the principles learned about God and His kingdom from the DTS Lecture Phase and to apply them even more deeply. You will travel as a team to an international location and serve through mercy ministries, evangelism and intercession. It will offer the possibility to share the love of God, which you have experienced in your own life, in a variety of contexts.
Outreach Phase will allow you to experience the beauty and challenges of serving God in an intense cross-cultural experience. We desire to delve deeper into what it means to live out the gospel as “ministers of reconciliation” by serving others in the midst of broken societies.
The outreach location is not yet decided, but will likely be to another conflicted or post-conflicted nation, such as Lebanon or South Africa.
The Discipleship Training School (DTS) will bring about many new experiences and ways of seeing the world around you. The last 1-2 weeks of DTS will be spent having a time of “debrief” together in Belfast to process the experiences you’ve had and what God has done in your life over the past 6 months. It’s an important to time together as a team to share stories of how God moved in and through you over the past six months.
Join our internship for an opportunity to continue to grow, be equipped in ministry and serve in Belfast!
We see this as a great opportunity to deepen the growth that has been happening in your life during DTS while getting to further experience ministry. More information to come!
We recognise that many people finish DTS and are still hungry for more missions experience and training at a formational and foundational time in their lives. We want to offer the opportunity to join our 6 month internship to give the chance for further ministry and input. During this time, you will have the opportunity to serve in different ministries in Belfast to get a further sense of what serving with YWAM Belfast could look like longer term. In addition to serving in local ministry, there will be additional training, discipleship, learning through small groups and getting to visit other YWAM locations around the island of Ireland. We see this as a great opportunity to deepen the growth that has been happening in your life during DTS while getting to further experience ministry. More information to come!
